Alaior defines itself as an industrial and University City. Being a headquarters of the University of the Balearic Islands in Menorca has turned this town, with a prominent milky and cheesy industry, into a young and dynamic city. Likewise, it is known for its skilled pastry chefs, that generation after generation have inherited the art and creativity in the pastries. The famous ice creams La Menorquina were from Alaior. The town enlarged around two churches: San Diego and Santa Eulàlia, recently restored, with its charming patio of orange trees. Not least interesting is the visit to the cloisters that has the suggestive name of The Patio of the Moon.
